HyP SA – Generation Facility EPC

Project Overview:

Hydrogen Park South Australia (HyP SA) represents a pioneering development in renewable hydrogen production. Located within Adelaide’s Tonsley Innovation District, this facility is Australia’s largest renewable hydrogen generation site and the first to blend renewable hydrogen into an existing domestic gas distribution network. Altrad (formerly Valmec) was contracted as the EPC provider, managing the engineering, procurement, and construction of onsite infrastructure for South Australia’s first renewable hydrogen production facility.

Scope:

  • Engineering, design, and construction of the facility’s infrastructure.
  • Procurement of major process components.
  • Integration of OEM vendor packaged equipment.
  • Execution of Civil works, Structural, Mechanical, and Piping (SMP), and Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) installations.
  • Commissioning of all systems, ensuring operational readiness for hydrogen production.

Manning:

  • Over 90% local employment and 50% local spend

Outcomes:

  • Successfully delivered a 1.25 MW electrolyser capable of producing 100 kg of hydrogen per day using 100% renewable energy.
  • Established a facility that supplies blended renewable hydrogen gas to local properties as part of a five-year demonstration project.
  • Earned multiple accolades, including:
    • 2020 Engineers Australia Australian Engineering Excellence Award
    • 2020 South Australian Premier’s Awards for Energy and Mining (Innovation and Collaboration)
    • 2020 SA Climate Leaders Awards (Business and Industry category)
    • 2020 Australian Pipelines and Gas Association Environment Award
    • MENA Hydrogen Project of the Year 2022
  • Achieved over 90% local employment and a 50% local spend, supporting community engagement and economic growth.

Challenges and Solutions:

  • Addressed design challenges associated with integrating renewable hydrogen generation in an urban area.
  • Collaborated with AGIG during the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase and detailed design to resolve technical challenges.
  • Ensured smooth commissioning through phased testing and operational optimisation, including blending hydrogen with natural gas and producing hydrogen for distribution.
