Project Overview:
The Geraldton Bootenal and Rangeway Control Valve Upgrades were critical to ensuring a reliable water supply for the town of Geraldton. The project involved modifying inlet piping and valve systems at two strategic tank sites namelyBootenal and Rangeway, which collectively supply groundwater to the area. Altrad (formerly Valmec) delivered the upgrades, addressing corroded infrastructure and integrating external monitoring for improved operational control.
Scope:
Altrad’s scope of work included:
- Supply, fabrication, and installation of spools and valves (primarily DN600 MSCL).
- Execution of two shutdowns for bypass line installations, including the installation of multiple thrust blocks (up to 15 tonnes).
- Installation of electrical and SCADA systems for external monitoring and manipulation.
- Testing and commissioning.
- Civil works associated with piping and valve upgrades.
Outcomes:
- Delivered the project on schedule with no safety incidents, ensuring continuity of water supply to Geraldton.
- Shutdown Constraints: Managed two critical shutdowns, including the Bootenal site, where water supply to the town was temporarily affected. Deployed extensive resources, including two 160-tonne cranes, four 30-tonne excavators, and multiple trucks, to complete the works within a 12-hour window.
- Corrosion Issues: Addressed severely corroded discharge pipelines and leaking infrastructure at the Rangeway site by creating a separable portion to re-lay pipework and replace unsafe components.
- Improved infrastructure reliability and operational control, enhancing the Water Corporation’s ability to maintain and monitor the system.
- Improved Reliability: Upgrades ensured ease of external monitoring and manipulation, providing redundancy for maintenance and repair at the tank sites.
- Adaptability: Proactively identified and resolved unplanned issues, including the replacement of unsafe corroded components.
