Twin Stacker Boom – Fabrication & Installation

Project Overview:

The Dampier Salt Mine required the replacement of two critical stacker booms (CV401 and CV402) to address operational inefficiencies and mitigate the effects of severe salt corrosion. Altrad (formerly AusGroup) was commissioned to fabricate, machine, surface treat, assemble, and install the new stacker booms. Each 33-meter boom, weighing 18 tonnes, was fully dressed with idlers, guards, grating, and handrails to meet stringent client specifications.

Scope:

  • Specialist fabrication and welding of 33-meter stacker booms, weighing 18 tonnes each.
  • Application of advanced surface treatments to prevent salt corrosion.
  • Transportation planning and logistics from the AltradKwinana facility to the Dampier site.
  • Onsite installation and support for ground crews during assembly.
  • Isolation of stainless steel from carbon components to enhance durability.

Manning:

  • Peak manning:15 personnel.

Outcomes:

  • Fabricated, surface-treated, and installed two fully dressed stacker booms meeting Rio Tinto’s operational requirements.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Addressed complexities associated with salt processing by implementing specialist surface treatments to protect against corrosion and enhance the lifespan of the equipment.
  • Transportation Logistics: Successfully planned and executed the transport of large structural components from Kwinana to Dampier, ensuring safe and efficient delivery.
  • Delivered the project within the 5-month schedule, adhering to high safety and quality standards.
  • Strengthened Altrad’s reputation for delivering tailored solutions in corrosive and challenging industrial environments.
