Project Overview:
As part of the Tanami Expansion 2 (TE2), Newmont aimed to expand surface infrastructure to support the development of a new production shaft at the Tanami Gold Mine. The project required extensive civil works to connect new and existing mine infrastructure, ensuring operational efficiency and safety. Altrad (formerly Valmec) was contracted to deliver trenching, service installations, and substantial concrete construction for critical infrastructure foundations.
Scope:
Altrad’s scope of work included:
- Service Corridors (buried and surface-run services):
- Trenching for utility corridors (pipes and cables).
- Installation of piping and trench backfill.
- Installation of conduits and pull pits for cables.
- Coordination with EIC contractors for cable installation.
- Utility corridor road crossings and pavement repairs.
- Concrete Construction:
- Over 4,500 m³ of concrete for foundations, ground slabs, footings, and pedestals.
Outcomes:
- Delivered comprehensive surface civil works supporting non-process infrastructure, including headframes, winders, material handling systems, and administration facilities.
- Remote Location: The remote site, 560 km from Alice Springs, required meticulous planning and resource management to minimise downtime.
- Design Adjustments: Managed frequent design changes and simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) through flexible resource allocation and detailed coordination.
- Established robust service ties for utilities such as electrical, water, diesel, and communications between new and existing infrastructure.
- Reinforced Altrad’s ability to execute complex projects in remote environments, ensuring high-quality standards and timely delivery.
