OVERVIEW

The Tanami Expansion 2 (TE 2) is further developing the underground mine at Newmont Tanami Operations (NTO) by constructing a production shaft.
As part of TE 2, the surface sub-brace concrete foundations are required to be installed to support the headframe structure and access for services to the shaft.
The concrete subterranean bulk air cooler (BAC) and services ducts will be integrated into the sub-brace for underground ventilation and routing of shaft services.
Valmec’s (now part of Altrad) scope of work specifically relates to the surface excavation, installation of concrete foundation, and backfill of material in order to execute the box-cut and sub-brace design.

THE SCOPE
  • Construction of sub-brace and associated ducts using box-cut excavation method (23,000m3 cut)
  • Sub-brace concrete base slab installation (600 m3)
  • Sub-brace concrete walls installation (500 m3)
  • Sub-brace concrete BAC & service ducts (400 m3)
CHALLENGES

The remote site location (560km from Alice Springs) presented many challenges throughout the project.
A great amount of upfront planning and contingency was implemented in order to minimise the impact of any downtime.
A large portion of the excavation needed to be completed using 85T excavators and rock breakers.

ADVANTAGE

Utilisation of Valmec internal plant & personnel assisted with expediting the project.
Valmec has completed numerous projects in remote parts of Australia, and this experience was essential in the execution of this remote project.
